Can you connect Bluetooth headphones to Xbox One?

Xbox One

Right now most headphones have Bluetooth device inbuilt. So you have no problem with Bluetooth connectivity. But here’s something different. It’s just that Microsoft, the maker of the Xbox, has decided to take a different path to connect wirelessly. You can use it even if your Bluetooth device is of poor quality. It doesn’t make any difference to you in connectivity.

Moreover, it uses a unique, in-house wireless protocol – Xbox Wireless – instead of going with Bluetooth. But, unlike Bluetooth, which uses 2.4GHz radio frequency, Xbox Wireless uses high RF. This results in reduced latency and improved audio experience when using headphones.

With its own wireless technology, Microsoft launched technology-specific peripherals. This includes headsets that lack the typical Bluetooth feature.

These are just a few of the Xbox-compatible headsets, and they come in two types:

  • The first wireless dongle is used. Which users connect to one of the Xbox controller’s USB ports to connect headphones.
  • Connects automatically to the console instead of passing through other controllers. Thus, eliminating the need for dongles and whatnot. These types of wireless headphones are a bit more expensive, however, but they are extremely efficient on their own.
Note– that Xbox headsets do not work on non-Xbox wireless consoles like PS4 and Nintendo. However, with the alleged superiority of these headphones over BT headphones, they are starting to sell hot in Xbox gamer groups.

How to Connect Compatible Xbox One Wireless Headsets

Because Xbox Wireless is a unique technology developed by Apple, first-time users find it a bit confusing to connect devices under this unfamiliar protocol. Following are the same steps apply to other Xbox-friendly wireless headsets.

  1. Turn your headphones to ‘pairing mode’. This usually involves holding down the power button until the LED lights are on.
  2. Proceed to turn on your console by pressing the power button of the console.
  3. Still, on your console, find the pairing button. [Note: For older Xbox models before the Xbox One S and X, this can be found on the left side of the console, near the disk drive. For newer models, it’s located at the bottom right of the front panel.
  4. Enable pairing by pressing the pairing button on your console until its LED light flashes. This shows readiness.
  5. Go back to your wireless headset and find the connect button. Press and hold this button and wait for the LED to flash quickly. This means that the device is ready to connect. [Note- Other headphone models may require different ways to do this. It’s best to consult the user guide for your headphones for confirmation.]
  6. Give the LED lights on both devices a few seconds to stabilize. The console will then flash the “Headset Assigned” note. And from the headset, you’ll hear a tone. If the devices connect successfully, you will start listening to the audio of the game.

Connecting compatible devices is a simple task. But for non-compatible headphones, BT takes a whole new process to establish a wireless connection. Subsequent guides make it easy for you to navigate through the steps.
