Sony WH-1000XM5 Review: Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphone

Sony WH-1000XM5

Well, Sony set a milestone every year, setting the world benchmark for noise cancellation. We are facing, probably, the best circumaural headphones in the world (with the permission of those of Apple, which have a crazy price). In this version, we find Sony WH-1000XM5 with a slightly refined and modified aesthetic, which come in a very compact and thin case. I have opted for the white color, which is actually more of a bone-grey color, and which I think is gorgeous.

Let’s review its different sections in a concise way so that you know what you can find without wasting time!

  • Total and absolute comfort
  • Design
  • Improved touch controls
  • Built-in Voice assistance
  • Excellent Sound

  • Noise cancellation is great, but not AS SO AS brutally superior as I expected compared to previous models.
  • Airplane adapter not included

💢 Sony WH-1000XM5: Price

As of today, the Rs.29,990 that they cost seems exorbitant for what they offer, and even more so when compared to the one they have come to replace. The price of a premium product is going to devalue quickly, so when the new model is released, you will not be able to recover almost anything of your investment. For this price, I would invest a little more and wait for an offer for the AirPods, which are of premium quality. If you want to buy this headphone than go to the company’s official website

📦 Box Content Or Packaging

The external packaging is made with recycled materials, very sustainable, and very very minimalist, I loved it. The travel case is quite slim, seems to protect well, and has a flip-up lid to store the 3.5mm jack cable and USB-C charging cable. Of course, this model for the first time does not include the airplane connector, so if you are going to travel with them, keep that in mind and get one!

Sony WH-1000XM5: ⚙️ Design and Construction ⚙️

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sorry, but I’m a classic. That you spend a lot of grass on a whim and receive it with that poor packaging… the presentation of the product seems a bit poor to me. We all become aware of the ecological, it would be missing, but you can have more attractive presentations.

In this case, Sony WH-1000XM5 is also a change in style, if in the previous model’s imitation leather was used, this time it has a textile aspect. I liked this change more, I think it’s more beautiful. The consistency and compartmentalization of the case are very good, it is a good case.

Where the big change is in the Sony WH-1000XM5 themselves. The first sensation it gives is how light they are, compared to their predecessors they have reduced the weightier lot, it does not reach 250 g, and they are very light. This is because they are completely built-in, and lightweight, but do not give that feeling of premium quality that you have paid for.

The design is totally different from the M4, much more modern. Although I have to say that Sony WH-1000XM5 looks better in the photos than in the hand….

The size of the cups is similar, both in diameter and width. But these cups can only rotate 90°, but cannot fold, making your transport bulkier.

I don’t know if it’s a success or not, but it’s a difference.

The ear pads are also narrower, allowing you to contact your ear with the inside of the headset. They are less generous than before. The headband has changed a lot, it is much narrower and lighter (more plastic) although well-padded. The regulation of its length is made from the connections of the cups, these are metallic.

🕹️ Touch Controls

The Sony WH-1000XM5 have a Power button (which, when pressed briefly, will tell you the percentage of battery remaining), and a button to activate/deactivate noise cancellation and ambient mode. In older models, we had a dedicated button to enhance the passage of the voice when they talk to us, but that disappeared a while ago.

In addition, we have touch controls in one of the pavilions, increase/decrease volume, skip songs, stop playback, etc., and they respond wonderfully, much better than in previous models. You can also use the automatic detection of your voice so that the headphones go into ambient mode and you can talk to people around you without having to turn off noise cancellation.

📱Mobile App📱

Sony’s great software as always makes the most of the excellent hardware in these headphones. At this point, Sony sets a bar that is difficult to reach by firms dedicated only to audio. In the main area, it indicates the battery level of the headset, as well as the codec they are working with. It has different sections: – Sound: to modify the equalization of the headphones, between default or manual equalizations to your liking with the 7-way equalizer and the extra-bass. – Control and configuration of the ANC. – System: for updates, the functionality of touch buttons, etc.

One thing that I really like relate to this is that even if the headphones were synchronize with the TV. Thus, if a call arrives, the synchronization with the mobile is automatically activate and I can answer it with the headphones without having to mess with the app.

The app has a ton of extra options for setting up sound and other technologies to explore, like one that makes the headphones recognize the shape of your ears with photos to match 3D sound to you with certain compatible apps. I have not tried this, because I do not use any of those audio apps that are compatible.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Comfort and Quality

The Sony WH-1000XM5 are extremely comfortable. They make just the right pressure on your head and ears to be able to wear them for hours without any discomfort. The sponge with which the earmuffs and headbands are made is soft and offers absolute comfort. They adapt to your head in a way that it seems that you are not wearing anything.

As regards the quality of the materials and construction, they are very premium headphones that give a feeling of absolute quality and that they will stand the test of time without any problems.

As a not so positive point, say that the headphones do not bend and when you, want to leave them resting on your neck, the ear cups turn forward (and not backward as is common with most). This is a minor detail, but personally, I would have liked them to be foldable to be more portable, although on the other hand, by avoiding that fold I think they gain durability and a feeling of robustness.

Related to this last point, the headphones come with a transport case in which they and the charging cable and the 3.5-millimeter connection cable fit perfectly.

Sony WH-1000XM5: 🎶🎶🎶 Sound🎶🎶🎶

Sony WH-1000XM5 are absolutely insane. The issue of active noise cancellation that they have seems authentic black magic. It is without a doubt the feature that stands out the most from this series of Sony products and without having tried the previous ones, I have to say that this one is crazy. With noise canceling on and a podcast or song on, my partner was talking to me 16 inches away and I could see her move her lips but couldn’t hear anything she was saying. When we are not playing anything and we have the noise cancellation activate, the difference is also noticeable and the ambient noise is greatly reduce, but you can hear your surroundings.

Apart from this active noise cancellation mode, it has a “transparency” mode, which does the opposite, it allows you to perfectly hear your entire environment and what you are playing at the same time. It works very well and the level of audio that we want to receive from our environment can be controlled from the mobile app (on a scale from 1 to 20).

To all this, we must add the “chat to talk” function, which recognizes when we start to speak and automatically lowers the volume of the music and deactivates the noise suppression. Once we stop talking, everything goes back to how it was after a few seconds, which are configurable from the app (the minimum is 5 seconds). If we do not want to use this option, we also have the possibility of covering the right earphone with one hand and we will obtain the same result and as soon as we separate our hand from it, the noise suppression will be activated again and the volume of what we are playing will return to your level.

🤫 Active noise cancelling 🤫

Excellent, the best on the market. But it does not improve that of the M4 (in my case due to worse passive insulation of the cups it makes it worse) My impression comparing them with the M4 is that it isolates less continuous and bass sounds (like bus engines) and even continuous treble sounds (like air conditioners, I think they are worse than the M4. In the voices of the people (office or cafeterias), I think they are similar, they do a great job.

It has three ANC modes – ANC: configurable at different levels from the app – Ambient sound: amplifies ambient sound naturally so that you don’t have to remove it at any time if you want to talk. – Off This ANC function has some very interesting and exclusive additional options: – speak to Chat: the headphones detect your voice through their microphones, automatically activating ambient sound mode and stopping playback.

You can regulate the sensitivity and the duration of the effect after finishing the conversation (now with the masks, it is activated only by humming…) – Adaptive sound control: thanks to the geolocation of the phone, the headphones automatically change the ANC mode based on your movement. That you’re sitting down, well, it automatically activates the ANC, that you start to move, it deactivates so that you can connect to the outside world… and so you configure it as you want. – Attention mode: placing the palm of the hand on the left touch panel stops the playback and activates the ambient sound, in order to have an immediate conversation.

Regarding the microphone section, it should be noted that this new model incorporates a total of 8 microphones. Which is double that of its predecessor, thus allowing more information to be obtained from the environment. Which combined with the V1 processor, allows for the more efficient and precise elimination of all types of noise. Even wind noise.

From what you have been able to read, you can guess what happens with the calls. In fact, they are of very good quality, allowing them to be made in any environment, without the person with whom we are speaking appreciating any type of noise. In the case of strong wind, the person has appreciated it but in a very slight way. So, it is clear that they are very good.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Connectivity

Sony WH-1000XM5

Excellent, Bluetooth 5.2, stable reliable, and low consumption. The headphones are very easy to pair with up to two devices at the same time. Once paired, we can switch between devices in the app with a simple touch. So automatically when you stop playback on the one you can start it on the other, it’s wonderful. But to be able to use it you must deactivate the LDAC codecs. I have to say that this function has not worked very well and there are times when the headphones have jumped from one device to another without my request. I have tried it with a television and a smartphone at the same time.

Regarding the quality of the pairing, I have to say that there are no disconnections or micro-cuts and that there is no perceptible delay or input lag when using them to watch the video. With the headphones synchronized with the TV, I have watched several series on both Netflix and HBO Max and also videos on YouTube and I have not noticed any delay that makes viewing uncomfortable.

Sony WH-1000XM5:🔋🔋 Battery 🔋🔋

Sony WH-1000XM5

In this case, it is also difficult to improve what we already had, the manufacturer promises 30 hours, which, as soon as it comes close, is outrageous. It is one of the best autonomies on the market. In this sense, by being able to turn them off (not like the AirPods Max, this duration will be real, they will not drain only little by little as happens with the Apple ones. They have an automatic shutdown when not in use as well as a quick charge of 3 hours in just 3 minutes. The battery is still its strong point.

🧐🧐🧐 Conclusion 🧐🧐🧐

Honestly, they have left me cold, they do not offer me any substantial improvement over their M4 predecessors to justify the tremendous investment of Rs.29,990 (and if you do not have either, for 250 you can get the M4).

In addition, the rapid devaluation of Sony products as soon as a few months pass and/or the model is update, make it an investment with few signs of recovery. When you want to buy the new model at the launch price you will have to practically give away the previous ones.
